Anticipating Springtime!

Watching the weather reports it seems to be the longest winter we have experienced in quite some time. We had ice earlier this week, lost power for only 2 hours.  Expecting rain this weekend and cooler than normal temperatures next week.  The good news is we are far enough south that this last blast of winter will be short lived. So looking forward to seeing the crocus poking up through the dirt and enjoying other spring flowers.

Late fall and throughout the winter, Jerry cleared brush and dead trees on the back part of the 40 acres, what an improvement in appearance. He offered the hardwood to local neighbors and the owner of his favorite barbecue place. Jerry knocks the dead trees over with his dozer, the guys cut them up with their chainsaws and haul away. We keep much of the wood for all the fire pits. The log splitter is one of many toys, I mean tools, we use to keep heavy lifting to a minimum and save hours of labor.

One of the first spring projects will be to erect a tee-pee on the property. This will be placed in a secret location to be discovered on one of the many walking trails. Just another fun thing to enjoy during a stay at Country Charm!  We are also in the planning stages to build two additional cabins. After soliciting opinions from several of our guests, we are looking to buy a pontoon that will be available for guests to rent.

We are now headed into our 15th year of hosting guests from around the country and some from around the world. Still enjoying what we do, living our dream and hearing other peoples life stories. Thanks to all of our many guests and the growing number of repeat guests that keep us going and remaining positive.

We have been busy!

Why have I not written anything for a year?  I don't have a good answer other than we  have been busy with projects and life in general.
We recently rescued a sweet 3 yr old black lab named Marley. Buster, our golden retriever, now has a new best friend. They are only 10 days apart in age, but Marley has gray under his chin. Could be due to his stressed out life.  Those days are over!  He is quite spoiled, extremely well behaved and intelligent.  Lucy the cat was out voted on the entire matter, but has accepted him wholeheartedly. We only had to assure her of her place in the animal kingdom-queen of all. Marley and Buster are the welcoming committee to all our guests and enjoy escorting anyone out walking on the property.
Speaking of property, Jerry has been busy mowing all season due to more than usual rainfall, especially in August. The green grass is a welcome sight this time of year. Any free time finds Jerry on some sort of heavy equipment knocking down trees, moving logs, and last week finished grooming another walking trail/fire lane on the northeast side of the land.
We managed to take a few precious vacation days during the year. We enjoyed travelling and spending time in West Monroe, LA (yes, we visited the duck empire); Jefferson, TX (great antiques and B&B's); Denton, TX (to watch a pigeon race-ask Jerry) and Mari traveled to Chicago in June for a family wedding.
Looking forward to a beautiful fall and continued blessings we receive each day. Stay safe, live each day as best as you are able.

Summer is coming to a close, but for being in the south, we had few scorching hot days. It is a bit odd that early September had the most hot and humid days.  No one missed having a burn ban this summer, either. We are looking forward to a colorful fall season as we did receive plenty of rain in spring and early summer.
The deer have been regular early morning visitors as Jerry sprinkles feed corn around the property. The young ones are the most entertaining as they run and play while the older ones stand ready to take off when they hear or see something that is unusual.
One of our funny stories of the summer was receiving a frantic call from a couple regarding huge spiders.  They sounded terrified. After going to the cabin and asking them to point out the problem, it was a daddy long leg hanging on the outside screen of the kitchen window.  Since this couple was from the United Kingdom, we quickly realized they must live in the city of London and apparently had never encountered such a beast.

Springtime Birdwatching

We have enjoyed watching the wrens, sparrows, tufted titmouse and occasional pine warbler during the winter, but now that spring is here, we are watching for the spring varieties. We will miss our favorite winter birds - dark eyed juncos. Did see several robins last week enjoying the sunshine. A pair of wood ducks visited our pond the other day and of course the blue heron is a frequent visitor.
